Legal Poisoning?

In America, we have an organization that is supposed to oversee the safety, and health compliance of food, medicines, and other products. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is the stamp of approval that Americans rely on as a confidence that what we ingest is safe and meets standards that keep our population healthy. At some point since the creation of the FDA, things have gone sideways. Now their guidelines no longer keep the health and happiness of Americans as a top priority, but rather now there is a strange relationship between the administration and food and drug processing companies. The objective now seems to generally be that products are approved, not based on their health and safety compliance, but rather that they comply with meeting certain contractual legalities. There are many ingredients commonly used in food products in the US that are known to be cancer causing, cause attention deficit, cause hyper-activity, and many other known health concerns. You might wonder why these manufacturing/production facilities add things that are detrimental to our health? The answer is two-fold the first obvious answer is simply because they can, the second part can range from marketability, shrink loss, increasing shelf life etc. This is completely legal, and the companies have no liability concerning the health of the consumers. This is the true reason behind the FDA enforcing “ingredients lists” on all products sold in the US. It is essentially a contract that you enter into when purchasing a product, you know what the use of the product is (typically food), and you are given an extensive list of the chemicals, and ingredients used to produce it; therefore, by purchasing the product you have acknowledged that you will use the product as intended, and even if you are ignorant of the factors that cause health problems, you have been informed of the ingredients, and through purchase, consented to the use of that ingredient. This sounds terrible, doesn’t it? Sorry to say…it gets worse.

Now, we have an additional health risk, one that we are ignorant of the long-term effects of primarily because it is new technology. Now when you are shopping at the grocery store, buying cereal for the kids, or that pack of cookies to snack on later, you have to pay close attention to the label, and on many products, you will find the words “Contains Bio-Engineered Ingredients”. It does not tell you which ingredients, how they are “engineered”, and there is absolutely no accomplished study to determine what the long-term health benefits/issues that may come with this type of ingredient. In my opinion, I have a very hard time that this technology will be beneficial for people. It seems that at least 80% of the food in any given supermarket is actually poison, or at the very least devoid of nutritional value. Our society has fallen quite far when even the food that we feed our children is invariably questionable, and short of buying everything farm fresh, or growing your own food, it is unavoidable.
